How to volunteer -- July 2010
We are looking for volunteers with experience in Journalism or in software development (Perl) to help establish a "news wire" for disaster and humanitarian relief victims as well as remote aid workers. The concept is to deliver highly targeted information that is written to a very basic level and highly relevant to the end users. This information will be delivered to the end users over a variety of transmission methods to include SMS (text messaging), email, and long distance narrow band radio. It is our goal to deliver this information in a wide variety of languages in the future but for now, just in English and Spanish and perhaps Chinese (if we find a Chinese Editor). If you speak one of the above languages or have another language of interest such as Vietnamese, we would be happy to consider using it. While we have a "proof of concept" publishing engine now, our long term goal is to create a more effective cross technology delivery platform due to the various delivery methods we want to use. Most of the platforms today are really designed for a single delivery system (print, radio, etc.) and we are more focused on a number of delivery methods. We are in the early stages of testing now and would welcome any feedback on how to improve what we want to accomplish or how we can do it better (either the style or the technology). Depending on your schedule, you can work with us as much as you wish. Once we are established and working in a production setting, it may be possible to work from your home. If we ever get major funding, there may be some paid positions available. We do not provide any social benefits except for good coffee and very good tea as well as the knowledge you could be making a difference in people lives.
